'Rastafari: A very short introduction' - Ennis Edmonds - Review
I read this book because I am fascinated by how a religion can form. While they may appear to be inspired by the teachings of a deity, the reality is that cultural practices and politics shape the doctrine. Rastafari is an example of this that takes place in the light of history. Black nationalism, Pan-Africanism and Jamaican customs are much more significant in its creation than any action by Hallie Selassie, the emperor of Abyssinia whom Rastafarians believe in Jah (God) incarnate. I have explored this topic in a previous post, link here

The book offered a brilliant overview into Rastafari. It explained its origins and customs in great
depth and gave me a comprehensive understanding of the nature of the
religion. The chapters on Rastafarian
culture were fascinating, and enjoyable to read, quoting Bob Marely lyrics is
welcome in any book!
